Ahrex NS172 Curved Gammarus Hook – Lightweight Wide-Gap for Shallow Water

Designed for Gammarus patterns

The Ahrex NS172 curved Gammarus hook is engineered to deliver a natural, lifelike presentation in shallow streams and calm pockets. Its curved profile minimizes bulk, helping the fly sit and move with the current rather than fighting it. A lightweight wire enables readier work in shallower depths, giving you smoother, more controllable casts and a subtler silhouette in the water.

Why this hook stands out on the water

The combination of a large hook gape and the hook’s lightweight construction means you can tailor the rig with a little ballast if needed, without compromising the hook’s natural action. This versatility supports deliberate depth control and helps you adapt to changing conditions without sacrificing the fly’s balance.

Key features at a glance

• Chemically sharpened point for clean, confident entry
• Small barb to minimize snagging while maintaining hook integrity
• Black nickel finish for durability and stealth in clear or stained water
• Available in sizes 1/0 through 12 to cover a range of Gammarus patterns
• Wide gap designed to support lively, natural movement of flies tied for shallow water

Real-world use and setup ideas

When you’re patterning for Gammarus-inspired flies, the NS172 helps you keep the presentation light and cinematic in slow to moderate flows. If the current quickens or you need extra depth, adding a touch of weight is feasible thanks to the broad gape, and it won’t derail the hook’s core capabilities.

• Shallow creeks and riffles where a subtle, buoyant presentation helps the pattern ride true
• Light tippets and understated thread work to preserve the natural look of the fly
• Situations calling for a strong, curved hook that resists snagging in tight cover
