Description
Overview
The BLACK DIAMOND ATC Pilot belay device is the redesigned ATC-XP package built for sport climbers and gym environments. It blends assisted braking with precise rope control, delivering a belay experience that feels secure and predictable without sacrificing smooth, intuitive operation. Designed for rapid transition between feeding rope and taking in slack, this device helps climbers stay in control during dynamic moves and long tackles alike.
Included in the package is the belay device alongside a locking carabiner, providing a ready-to-use setup for practice sessions, routes, or gym workouts. The ATC Pilot continues BLACK DIAMOND’s tradition of durability and confidence on the wall, with refinements aimed at everyday use in busy settings and training cycles.
Key benefits at a glance

- SMOOTH, PREDICTABLE ROPE HANDLING: Enables controlled take-in and feed-out, reducing rope tangles during leadership belays.
Design and handling
The device emphasizes ergonomic, user-friendly handling. A large thumb surface improves lowering comfort and gives climbers finer control during descent, making it approachable for both newcomers and experienced belayers.
- ERGONOMIC, EASY-TO-USE DESIGN: Intuitive handling that lowers the learning curve and supports confident operation.
- DURABLE STEEL CONSTRUCTION: Stainless-steel wear plate minimizes rope friction over time and withstands frequent training sessions.
Durability and compatibility
Built for regular use, the ATC Pilot pairs with common single ropes and is compatible with diameters roughly 8.7–10.5 mm. This range covers most modern indoor and outdoor climbing setups, helping you stay flexible across diverse routes and gym rigs.
Whether you’re belaying on sport routes, training climbs at the gym, or pairing with a club setup, the ATC Pilot aims to offer dependable rope control, comfortable lowering, and lasting wear resistance.
