Hareline Dubbin Lead-Free Round Wire for Fly Tying

Overview

Hareline Dubbin Lead-Free Round Wire is a dependable option for fly tyers who want weight on the hook shank without using traditional lead wire. This non-toxic heavy alloy delivers a dense feel in hand and during wrapping, giving you a visible, tactile reference as you build your pattern.

Material and density

The wire is engineered from a non-toxic heavy alloy that mirrors the weight you expect from lead, while removing the lead component. At roughly 60 percent of lead density, it provides a lighter feel without sacrificing stability or control when shaping and constraining thread wraps.

Key benefits

• Available in five sizes to dial weight for different patterns and water conditions.
• Density around 60 of lead, offering a lighter alternative with retained heft.
• Spool is compatible with most standard fly tying bobbins for easy integration.
• Slightly stiffer than traditional lead wire, helping wraps hold their form and resist compression during tying.
• Resists tarnish, so it maintains a clean look through extended tying sessions.

Real-world use cases

When you want to add weight to a shank without using lead, this wire gives you options. For streamer patterns, weighted nymphs, or bottom-weighted wets, a lead-free option can help you achieve quicker deeper drifts and better balance. The stiffness helps you maintain clean wraps in windy conditions or with larger bodies, while the tarnish resistance keeps the appearance consistent over multiple tying days.

Choosing a size and handling tips

Start with the smallest size for delicate patterns, and move to larger gauges as your fly pattern requires more heft. Wrap evenly with light tension to avoid deforming the wire. Store the spool in a dry place to preserve its finish.
