For best results, pair the Sabiki with a 6 to 9 ft light-action rod and a spinning reel. Tie the SABIKI rig to the line and attach a chum cage to the end for a steady scent trail that can attract cruising schools.
Chum and technique
Chum choice matters. Frozen krill is ideal when available; minced squid or even pet food can be effective substitutes when needed. Use ample chum to sustain a feeding zone and coax strikes from nearby fish.
- Chum placement: drop to the depth of the school, then gently lift the rod tip to scatter chum downward.
- Rig action: quickly reinsert the rig into the dispersed chum and watch for bites as fish investigate the movement.
If you don’t see bites, reel in, refill the chum cage, and try again. Once a fish is hooked, wind the line slowly to reduce the chance of losing the catch and to maximize subsequent bites.
