Overview

The Shimano 22 Sahara 500 is built for versatility on the water. It combines a compact, balanced silhouette with a responsive retrieve, delivering a dependable feel during casts and line pickup. While efficiency matters, the reel also emphasizes comfort for long days on the water.

Ambidextrous retrieval for flexible setups

The Sahara 500 is designed to accommodate both right- and left-handed anglers. The ambidextrous retrieval lets you switch grips mid-session without upheaval, helping you stay in sync with your target and your technique.

Smooth operation and reliable stopping power

Three ball bearings plus one roller contribute to a steady, quiet retrieve. The reel offers a solid drag profile around 3.0 kg, which gives you reserve stopping power as you work a fish toward the shore or boat.

Line capacity that fits common setups

  • Mono: 4-150 lb-m, 6-90 lb-m, 8-70 lb-m; 0.20 mm to 110 m
  • Braid: 0.6-185, 0.8-140, 1-110 (PE)

Practical use cases

Great for freshwater and light saltwater rigs that rely on precise line management and dependable retrieves. Whether you’re casting lightweight lures or handling mid-range tackle, the Sahara 500 offers a confident balance of strength, control, and reliability.

Setup, compatibility, and care

Designed to pair with standard lines and popular rod setups, the Sahara 500 supports a wide range of anglers. Regular care helps preserve its smooth feel and keeps the line flowing cleanly through the retrieve.

Why anglers choose Shimano

Shimano combines proven reel technology with a responsive feel. The Sahara 500’s ambidextrous design and credible line capacities align with many fishing styles, keeping options open without overcommitting to one approach.

Performance highlights

  • Ambidextrous retrieval enhances flexibility
  • Quiet, reliable operation with 3 Ball / 1 Roller bearings
  • Solid stopping power with up to 3.0 kg max drag
  • Broad line capacity for mono and braided lines
