Tan X Caddis Emerging Caddis Adult Trout Dry Fly – Set of 6 Flies Size 18 | The Fly Fishing Place

Begin your day on the water with the Tan X Caddis Emerging Caddis Adult Dry Fly. This pattern captures the moment an caddis insect emerges and struggles in the surface film, presenting a lifelike profile that trout notice. The tan tones, hair wing, and subtle movement come together to create a convincing surface presentation that anglers can rely on in many trout streams.

Craft and lineage

The X Caddis was created by Craig Matthews of Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone, a nod to years of field testing and practical design. The hair wing adds lift and a natural silhouette as the fly skims the surface while the insect exits its nymphal shuck. This attention to realism helps the pattern sit naturally on the surface, just where fish are looking for a quick, tempting meal.

Why anglers reach for it

• Effective dry fly in waters where caddis are common, across the West and beyond.
• Lower riding profile than many caddis imitations, beneficial on slick water and spring creeks.
• Realistic emerger impression with a hair wing that mimics movement in the surface film.
• Durable materials with a tan color that remains visible in varying light and water conditions.
• Origin and craft backed by a long pattern library, including thousands of proven classics and innovations tied in Oregon.
• Set of 6 flies provides a consistent option for pattern confidence on the water.

How to use

• Cast to rising or sipping trout in slow to moderate current and maintain a smooth drift to encourage surface take.
• Position the fly in slick seams and along water edges where caddis emerge, especially during calm mornings.
• Use light mends and avoid heavy strips to keep the fly riding through the surface film as intended.
