How to plant and manage
Where to plant: Areas with full sun to partial shade. Stands tend to perform best in plots larger than 2 acres but can also work in smaller plots.
Soil and fertility: pH 5.5–7.0; minimum soil fertility ranges from low to moderate.
Planting timing: North regions May–Aug; Central May–Aug; South April–Sep. Plant anytime after the last frost through summer.
Soil prep and seeding: Disc, till, or plow. Can be drilled. Lightly drag to cover seed, but avoid burying too deep. Culti-pack after planting; no-till into short vegetation is possible.
Depth and fertilizer: Plant 1/2–3/4 inch deep. For best results, use the Whitetail Hill Soil Test and apply fertilizer as recommended.
Seasonal notes
Leaving seed heads and residual pods standing can support late-season deer activity. If you want to transition to a cool-season plot, mow or disc under in fall or leave standing for late-season forage. Sorghum seed heads can be a feature for late-season attraction.
